Welcome to the first Athens Rum Festival

Thanos PrunarusBaba Au Rum, Fine Magazine and now the first Rum Festival in Athens. Thanos Prunarus is always busy. So this adventure led me to this very first rum festival in Athens, enjoying rum and presentations in a beautiful and anchient venue. Zappeio is located in the National Gardens of Athens and is currently used as a conference and exhibition center. A number of historical events have taken place at the Zappeion, so the right place for the opening event of Athens Rum Festival.

My flight was quite early and I arrived around noon. I headed straight to the festival to hand over some bottles of Rum Fire and Worthy Park for Nikos Arvanitis presentation. He talked about a new way of rum classification. Very interesting and passionated. There were so many good masterclasses and tastings. The atmosphere was very cosy and the people seemed happy and relaxed. Some bars presented their concepts, the big brands their products, some artist did fantastic things with rum bottles and at the very end of the space you found coffee and street food. Small but Fine 😉 Of course the Fine magazine had also a stand.

I am not an expert, just a passionated lover of fine drinking. So, do not miss this event next year. Flights and accomodation are affordable, and the I had sunshine and 24 degrees, while it was bloody cold in Berlin.

My Highlights

  • The new discover of the Plantation O.F.T.D. (Old Fashioned Traditional Dark) OVERPROOF with 69 % vol. The label of this blend says  Jamaica, Guyana, and Barbados. The label tasting notes say: “It bursts with caramel cream, chocolate, and vanilla notes. It continues on with cinnamon, raisins, nutmeg, oak, and molasses with smoky accents”. It is influenced by well-known rum and Tiki celebrities. Strong and lingering taste. I totally agree with the tasting notes.
  • Appleton 21 came with some sweets of the chef patissier Stelios Parliaros. Yummy!
  • Met the winner of the BACARDÍ Legacy Global Cocktail Competition 2016 Gn Chan. What a nice guy, and his shaking technique is amazing. His drink „Venceremos“ was an adventure. Perfectly balanced and already present in my taste memory.
  • Met Julio Bermejo, who has such a positive charisma. Also met the team behind Smuggler’s Cove and the Dirty Dick and so many other bar illuminaries.

Met all the Greek bartenders. Their welcome is far more than a polite word, it is characterised by an incrediable generosity and sincerity 💗
